Injection molding is the go-to process for producing plastic parts at scale. Raw plastic pellets are first fed into a hopper, and then melted inside a heated barrel while it’s pushed forward by a reciprocating screw.
Once enough material has built up in front of the screw tip, the screw drives forward and forces the plastic into the mold cavity. The mold and material are held under pressure while the plastic cools against the actively cooled mold walls. When the part has solidified enough to hold its shape, the mold opens up and an ejector system releases the part from the mold.

Excess material like runners and flash left on the part are trimmed after ejection, and for many materials the scrap can be reground and blended back with new material to be recycled.
